Boku to Star no 99 Nichi [ ep 1]

After finishing the first episode, it totally brings me back to Ayumi Hamasaki’s music video, Fate whereby she’s acting as herself promoting in Hong Kong, has a Chinese bodyguard and gradually has affection for him. This is similar to the MV with the only contrast is the actress now is a South Korean star, and has a Japanese bodyguard during her filming in Japan. Namiki Kouhei (bodyguard) however prefers watching stars over an actress who escapes almost every other night into the streets of Japan for food tasting and mingle with the locals, of course, under disguise. Namiki is forced to take on the job by his boss who can’t resist the big bucks she can get hold of upon completion of the 99 days of contract.

I’m not familiar with the Korean actress, Kim Tae Hae, other than knowing she was in Iris, of which the first episode, I just browsed through and recognized her. So I can’t compare her acting abilities with the other works she’s done. Though I’m not a big fan of Korean dramas (no bashing here, but I just don’t watch them), I do think this is a pretty nice collaboration between two countries. If you actually google her name up and put Japanese after, you get news of which a Japanese netizens are bashing her regarding something that happened long time ago. But I’m not going to go there. Each to their own opinions so since I’m neutral, I’m just enjoying the show as it is.

All in all, we have both main characters, Namiki (Nishijima Hidetoshi) and Han Yuna (Kim) though despite their differences and initial misunderstanding, coupled with Namiki’s reluctance to actually be her bodyguard, naturally we’re going to have them both growing closer to each other considering the time spent and probably Yuna’s going to be touched by Namiki’s help whenever she’s in trouble. At times though, I think Namiki’s expressions are a bit exaggerated and lots are shouting is involved.

Other than the two leads, there’s also this Takanabe Daichi (Yuna’s co-star) who seems to have more than just professional feelings towards her. From the look of it, he shall be Namiki’s opponent in the love triangle soon I suppose. But nothing’s going to be interesting without an aggressive reporter who hunts for the scandalous details of Yuna’s private life. Good to him back here though! I like the actor xD Yuna also has someone she’s searching for in Japan, there’s this keychain she’s constantly holding on her bag. We don’t know who he is yet but we know he’s quite a fine looking young man. I wonder if he’s Korean too like Yuna.

First episode is rather entertaining and thanks to the chemistry between Hidetoshi and Kim, it doesn’t feel that much awkward having different nationalities in a show. Actually I quite like it when they do collaborations like this, for example, bring in other stars from other countries.  Kim’s Japanese is quite fluent too and we get to hear some Korean (which will sound jibberish to me ^^ but it’s all good). I’m amused by the fact that Namiki is constantly bashed up in the show lolz…plasters all over his face, but it totally suits him.

  1. the other young man is Taecyeon(another big star from korea).I'm guessing his character is a long-lost little brother.I doubt Yuna's japanese-line is originally captured in acting..sounding like it was dubbed over in studio. The chemistry between the main casts still not up-to-par..looking for some other catalysts maybe.will continue to second episode.
